A Season of Welcome- Laurene Lafontaine

Rev-Lafontaine-MontviewLaurene Lafontaine was ordained in 1987 and will be installed on September 22, 2013 at Community Presbyterian Church in Rochester, Minnesota.

It has been a long journey. It started twenty-six years ago when Laurene was ordained as a Minister of Word and Sacrament in 1987. But she didn’t receive a call to pastor a church–the implication was that no one wanted hire an out lesbian pastor. She labored as an interim pastor or stated supply and later worked outside of the Presbyterian Church. But something was missing, as she couldn’t do what she felt called to do.

I was co-chair of the Pastor Nominating Committee that hired Laurene. We hired the best person for the job, not the best LGBT candidate, not the best woman, and certainly not the good-enough-for-a-minority person. The. best. person.

Others might find it amusing that most of congregation has little to no understanding that Laurene’s hiring resonates across our denomination. That’s because we weren’t trying to make a statement, we were just trying to find the person that God intended for us. Laurene has been overwhelmingly accepted because of her talent, her intellect, and her energy. And to a person, we are wildly excited about the future of our congregation.
