Looking for Sexuality Curriculum? Here's Some Help
One of the recommendations for which we are most frequently asked is curriculum for children and youth about sexuality with both an inclusive stance and a Reformed theological perspective. Westminster/John Knox Press recently published an excellent book for parents: Sex + Faith: Talking with Your Child from Birth to Adolescence, by Kate Ott. With the publisher's permission, the Covenant Network asked experienced Christian educator Charlotte McGowan to prepare a discussion guide based on the book,

Sharing and Creating Spanish-Language Resources Addressing LGBTQ Issues
Christian Hispanic/Latinx sisters and brother often must hide their sexual orientation or gender identity from their family, friends and religious community for fear of being rejected due to cultural, biblical and theological misconceptions. The Covenant Network is committed in 2017 to making many of its existing resources available in Spanish, and--where it will be helpful--to creating new ones.

The Covenant Network of Presbyterians is celebrating the ministry of its national organizer, the Rev. Tricia Dykers Koenig. Tricia will leave the organization’s staff this month after 16 years of service. Members of the board gave the stalwart organizer much of the credit for major changes in church policy over the past decade, admiring Tricia’s effectiveness and praising her tenacity.

Urging the Church to 'Hear the Voices of Peoples Long Silenced'
It is our hope that evolving organizations—including our own—are intentionally increasing their diversity, recognizing their privilege and committing to listen to groups that have sometimes been excluded from their life and leadership. As an expression of own ongoing work for inclusion and justice, the Covenant Network stands in solidarity with the Advocacy Committee for Women’s Concerns and Advocacy Committee for Racial Ethnic Concerns and urges attention to their letter.

A strong, hopeful, healing response to Item 11-05
One item of business that has garnered some attention at the General Assembly this week, Item 11-05, is an overture calling for an “apology” to LGBTQ people by the church. The Covenant Network supports the action being recommended by the Assembly’s Social Justice Committee, which is to answer this overture with an alternate statement.

J. Herbert Nelson at the 2015 Covenant Conference
J. Herbert Nelson on his keynote address to the "Unity Matters" conference, November 5-7 in Denver: "The Church of Jesus Christ is called to assist in reconciling people to Jesus Christ. Although we have witnessed significant gains through the Church and the government's judicial courts regarding LGBT concerns, issues regarding race and gender remain historically slow to resolve in the United States. The call for all communities, including the LGBT community, to engage broader historic movements of oppressed people is both imperative and immediate. The starting point for entry into these intersection of oppressions begins within the LGBT community itself. My address will connect the biblical imperative with steps for implementation."

'A Season of Welcome' Continues
Beginning in the fall of 2011, the Covenant Network gathered stories from LGBTQ individuals who heard a call to ordination and how they were experiencing the changes in the life of the church. We collected those at a special website called “A Season of Welcome.” You can find them here: https://covnetpres.org/a-season-of-welcome/. More stories are welcome! If you’d like to add your story to this permanent archive, please contact Tricia Dykers Koenig.

A Prayer for Courage
The Rev. Margaret LaMotte Torrence, Interim Pastor of Black Mountain (NC) Presbyterian Church, preached this sermon the day after the Presbytery of Western North Carolina affirmed Amendment 14-F. Her comments at the presbytery meeting are included: "I cannot imagine our marriage apart from the church. And how much harder it must be to nurture and sustain a relationship that runs against the grain of society’s norms. Yet we have told our gay brothers, our lesbian sisters—up until now—that their desire to live in covenant faithfulness has no place in the life of the Church. In so doing, it seems to me that we have robbed them of the companionship and the counsel of the Church, and we have robbed the Church of the full measure of their gifts—and their companionship—and their counsel. For anytime we are withholding part of who we are from our community, we are offering less than God would have us give. And anytime we have cut off part of the body, we are not fully the church."

Columbia Seminary Faculty: A Call to the PC(USA)
Recalling the pain of previous Presbyterian schisms, the faculty of Columbia Theological Seminary has issued a statement, Our Witness to Christian Love: A Call to the PC(USA), reminding the church of Jesus' teaching: "By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another." We are grateful for their witness.

Love the One You're With
A Sermon by Ken Kovacs on Psalm 86 & Romans 13:8-10: "Love of God, we know something about that, although we’re not very good at it. Love for neighbor, we know something more about that, although we’re not very good at that either. But what does it mean to love yourself? It’s clear that the ability to love one’s neighbor is inextricably linked to the ability to love one’s self. But how does one love one’s self without being or becoming selfish? Our response will shape the way we understand the Christian life. So with apologies to Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, how do you love the one you’re with? “One” here meaning oneself, this one, this self within, who we are. How do we love ourselves?"
