Stated Clerk calls for action against discriminatory legislation

The Rev. Dr. J. Herbert Nelson, II, Stated Clerk of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), has called on Presbyterians to act in support of LGBTQIA+ siblings as state legislatures across the country consider over 160 bills that would harm LGBTQIA+ people:

"We as Presbyterians, by the grace of God and the leading of the Holy Spirit, have come to fully understand that God loves all people, created all people and fully embraces all of us no matter what our orientation or gender expression is. Thus, any rejection of someone solely based on these characteristics is a rejection of God’s Creation."

Some of the recent bills seek to discriminate against transgender athletes. A talented swimmer named Lia Thomas was targeted this week by transphobic attacks questioning her legitimacy and her right to compete. Trans athletes deserve dignity and respect, but instead face heightened scrutiny and unfair discrimination. Until all LGBTQIA+ people receive full equity, our work continues toward a more generous and just world. Joining the Covenant Network of Presbyterians is one way to vocally affirm all God's children, including people marginalized for their gender or sexual identities. As Rev. Nelson said,

"We have to step up to places of controversy in order to stand for justice and truth. People of God, join me as we declare Presbyterians affirm the value of all God’s people."
