A Message of Hope and World AIDS Day

During Advent, we prepare for Christ’s coming with expectant hope. On December 1, we especially remember the church’s calling to love our siblings in Christ living with HIV and AIDS, working for justice for all who suffer and waiting hopefully in the promise of new life.We can contribute to hope by fighting the stigma around HIV, supporting those who live with HIV, and honoring the memories of those who have died from HIV-related illnesses. The proportion of people living with HIV/AIDS above age 50 is now more than double that of people under age 24.The Presbyterian HIV Network especially welcomes those who advocate and care for those affected by HIV/AIDS as a response to Jesus' ministry of love and justice. PHIVN is a member of the Presbyterian Health, Education, and Welfare Association (PHEWA).The PC(USA) also provides resources for churches or individuals to acknowledge World AIDS Day. The Presbyterian Mission Agency website states,

Since World AIDS Day occurs during the first week of Advent in the Christian year, it is appropriate (particularly in the sermon or prayers of the people) to make connections to the biblical and theological themes of the liturgical season. Advent is a time of waiting in hope and faith for the coming of Christ’s realm — a new creation in which God’s promises of justice, wholeness, and reconciliation are fulfilled. In this season of longing and anticipation, we give thanks for the light of life in Christ, which can never be extinguished (John 1:5).
