The Witness of Archbishop Tutu
When South Africans overcame their apartheid system and made the transition to non-racial democracy, they consistently applied those principles of equality in their constitution, also outlawing discrimination based on sexual orientation. Same-sex marriage has been legal in South Africa since 2006.One of the heroes of the struggle against apartheid, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, has been a powerful witness against intolerance and for equality; alarmed over a "wave of hate" aimed at lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons in Africa, Archbishop Tutu has written to "stand up against another wrong" in an article published in the Washington Post. The proposal of the draconian "Anti-Homosexuality Bill of 2009" in Uganda has prompted a response from Christian leaders in the United States, including PCUSA Stated Clerk Gradye Parsons and Moderator Bruce Reyes-Chow.
