Celebrating Bisexual Awareness Week

From September 16-23, we celebrate Bisexual Awareness Week and highlight the experiences and resiliency of bisexual+ people. Throughout #BiWeek, people learn more about the history, culture, and needs of bi+ communities. GLAAD, the nation's lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) media advocacy organization, co-founded Bisexual Awareness Week with BiNet USA. 

 

In 1998, Michael Page designed a pride flag to represent the bisexual community. The pink stripe symbolizes attraction to the same gender, the blue stripe symbolizes attraction to the opposite gender, and the purple stripe "overlaps" the blue and pink stripes to represent attraction to any genders.

 

At the 223rd General Assembly in June 2018, the Presbyterian Church voted unanimously to pass Overture 11-13, On Celebrating the Gifts of People of Diverse Sexual Orientations and Gender Identities in the Life of the Church. This overture apologizes for the church’s previous unwelcoming stance on LGBTQ parishioners, celebrates LGBTQ church pioneers, and promises to protect the human rights of all people created in the eyes of God. The Assembly encourages all congregations and councils of the PCUSA continually to seek to expand their welcome so that all might know the Good News of Jesus Christ and encourages all other communions to do the same.
