The Covenant Network of Presbyterians proudly supports Spirit Day, an annual event dedicated to raising awareness about bullying of LGBTQIA+ youth and demonstrating solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ community. This year, Spirit Day falls on Thursday, October 17, 2024.
The History of Spirit Day
In 2010, Spirit Day began as high school student Brittany McMillan responded to a series of high-profile suicides of LGBTQIA+ youth linked to bullying. McMillan encouraged her peers to wear purple to honor the lives lost and show support for LGBTQIA+ youth. GLAAD, a nonprofit LGBTQIA+ advocacy organization, amplified this call to action into a global movement.
The color purple was chosen because it symbolizes “spirit” on the rainbow flag, an emblem of LGBTQIA+ pride and diversity. Over the years, Spirit Day has grown to become one of the most visible anti-LGBTQIA+ bullying campaigns worldwide.
CNP recognizes the importance of creating safe and welcoming spaces for all children of God, particularly LGBTQIA+ youth who face disproportionate rates of bullying and harassment. Recent research shows the ongoing challenges for LGBTQIA+ acceptance:
– GLAAD’s 2024 Social Media Safety Index highlighted the prevalence of anti-LGBTQIA+ hate, harassment, and disinformation across major social media platforms.
– In 2023, more than 600 anti-LGBTQIA+ bills were introduced around the country, many targeting transgender individuals and LGBTQIA+ youth.
According to GLAAD’s #SpiritDay Index survey, 95% of non-LGBTQIA+ adults believe schools should be safe and accepting places for all youth.
